The Waggoner Way (PBIS)

Waggoner’s Approach to Behavior Management
Teacher with students in classrom
Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports (PBIS) The Waggoner Way is a school-wide program based on the Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) framework. The staff has worked closely together to develop The Waggoner Way, which matches the principles of PBIS in a way that fits the goals, mission and culture of C.I. Waggoner Elementary School. School-wide PBIS is a research-based framework that has been proven to improve school climate, reduce problem behavior, and increase academic instructional time in schools (for additional information go to www.pbis.org). Two primary areas of emphasis in PBIS are prevention and instruction of social behavior. PBIS is based on the idea that when students are taught clearly defined behavioral expectations and provided with predictable responses to their behavior, both positive and corrective, all students are more likely to meet those expectations.

School-wide Procedures

The Waggoner Way has developed school-wide procedures to accomplish the following:

Define Behavior Expectations.A small number of clearly defined behavioral expectations are described in positive, simple rules. At Waggoner, The Waggoner Way is toBe Safe, Be Respectful and Be Responsible. These expectations are defined across school settings.

Teach Behavior Expectations. The behavioral expectations and school procedures are taught to all students in the building, and are taught in real contexts.
Acknowledge Appropriate Behaviors.Once appropriate behaviors have been defined and taught, they are acknowledged on a regular and consistent basis.
Respond to Problem Behavior - Consequences.Despite our efforts to proactively set students up for behavioral success and to prevent problem behavior, there still could be incidents of problem behavior. When it comes to responding to problem behavior we have three primary goals: 1. Make sure to keep everyone safe. 2. Minimize the loss of instructional time for all students (including the student who engaged in problem behavior). 3. To teach the student the appropriate behavior to use instead of the problem behavior.

The School Rules:

BE SAFE

BE RESPECTFUL

BE RESPONSIBLE

PAW-sitives
每天,学生可以获得PAW-sitives (recognition slip) when they are caught being safe, respectful and/or responsible by a staff member. Students who earn a PAW-sitive goal slip place their slip in the basket to be in a Monday morning drawing. Five students selected receive a reward of their choice (bookmark, library book coupon, and other positive items).
School-wide Goal
A school wide goal of being respectful of class time has been established. Classes that reach their goal of no tardies for that week are determined from Synergy attendance records. A winning class is determined by a drawing and win a popcorn party or 5 minutes extra at recess. The winning class is announced each week and all classes who participate in the drawing are also announced.
Help at Home
To be successful, our behavior program needs to be a partnership between home and school. Please support The Waggoner Way by:
  1. Reviewing behavior expectations with your child
  2. Asking your child to tell you the three school rules
  3. Asking for an example of each way they can demonstrate each rule at school
  4. Discussing with your child ways that they can demonstrate these rules at home or in the community
  5. Using the three Waggoner rules at home — Be Safe, Be Responsible, Be Respectful
  6. Providing positive reinforcement (rewarding good choices with compliments or quality time) at home
